Do you/ when will you/why don’t you have “new crop?”
“New crop,” or pecans harvested in the fall of the current year,
becomes available as fast as we can get it. There are several factors which might
delay the harvest. Pecan harvest requires a killing frost. In the past, the average
date was around October 15th, but in the last few years, the first frost has
been unusually late. In 2003, our new crop did not become available until October
30th, a full two weeks later than normal. As Mrs. James says, “We are
waiting on the weather man.” We have delicious pecans all the year around,
as we freeze our pecans in the shell to preserve their freshness, only cracking
them when needed. We can confidently sell you our pecans at all times.
Do you sell wholesale?
Yes, large wholesale orders (minimum 100 pounds) should be booked in advance.
Do you have big papershell pecans?
Oh, no! We have 10,000 of our own trees and since papershell pecans do not
grow outside the American South, we do not handle them. We believe that our
Missouri Native pecans have a superior flavor –and most people who
have tasted our pecans prefer them to the papershells. Ours may be smaller,
but good things come in small packages!
Where are the trees?
If you look out the window at our shop, almost every tree that you can see is a nut-bearing tree, other than a few ornamental trees in Mrs. James’ yard. Almost all of the trees on both sides of the highway as you drive to our shop are pecan trees.
Can you mail pecans to me?
We have begun to do some shipping of pecans. Call 660.548.3427, contact us
by email at nuthut@mcmsys.com, or write a letter, and we will try to serve
you.
How many pounds of shelled pecans are there in a five-pound bag of cracked pecans?
There are about two and one quarter pounds of nutmeats in a five-pound bag.
How many cups of pecans are in a one-pound bag of shelled pecans?
There are about four cups of shelled pecans in a pound.
Do you “shake” pecans?
No, we do not. “Shaking” is subjecting cracked pecans to a machine that vibrates over a grid, causing some of the shelled halves and pieces to fall through and be reserved. When you buy cracked pecans from us, you are getting the whole product with the convenience of having the shells cracked for you.
What’s the easiest way to shell pecans from cracked?
Fill a mason jar about ¾ full, replace the lid, and shake vigorously. Then pour the contents onto a cookie sheet and sift through for nice halves that have come free from the shell. Repeat. A few pecans will remain to require a little more attention, but most will loosen right up. (Try not to eat too many during this process!)
What are your store hours?
The Nut Hut is open seven days a week, 9-5 October through December, with the exceptions of Thanksgiving and Christmas. We are open Monday-Saturday during other months. Come and visit us! |
